At Wadsworth Fields Primary School we follow the 2014 National Curriculum. Coverage of the Curriculum is tracked across school to ensure that children have the opportunity to study a broad and balanced range of topics and subjects.
Alongside the curriculum content children are encouraged to develop good learning behaviours. We encourage all children to be the best that they can be developing resilience, aspiration, independence, determination and confidence.
Each term, year group teams choose a topic which supports the delivery of the curriculum. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves and to choose their own areas of interest within each topic. Homework includes opportunity for children to explore their own ideas and to select their own way to present their discoveries to the rest of the class.
Reading and Phonics
Children in FS and Year 1 follow the Letters and Sounds programme of study supplemented by a phonics programme developed by Jason Wade. Any children who are not at the required standard of phonics at the end of Year 1 still access teaching on Letters and Sounds as appropriate. Once children reach Year 2 they start to access No Nonsense Spelling which also incorporates phonic knowledge and then moves into spelling rules and patterns. No Nonsense Spelling is then continued throughout the rest of the school.
Children are encouraged to choose their own reading books. The school uses book banding to support children in choosing reading material which is matched well to their developing reading skills. There is a range of reading material available throughout school helping children to find books which they would like to engage with. In FS and KS1 many of the reading books are within the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme but this is still supplemented with a wider range of texts.
If you want to know which topics your child is covering each term then go to the class pages for more detailed information.
